Go Oprah!

I just watched Frank Rich on Oprah talking about his new book, the war in Iraq, Katrina, and a host of other issues. The show is part of a series about Truth in America. It was fantastic, balanced, and exactly what the country needs – a healthy airing of opinions and discussion – INCLUDING criticism of the government. Two different soldiers spoke up – one said the media doesn’t report enough good news from Iraq, and the other said that she and alot of other soldiers are questioning the war. I tried going to a bunch of blogs on the episode – and most of them are right-wingers criticizing Oprah for having Frank Rich on the show. Funny how most of them require log-in’s to comment… I imagine they don’t want any critical thinkers on their sites either…

Is it me, or is Oprah finally getting a spine? She took on minimum wage earlier this year, said Obama would make a good President, and now this!  I like how this episode made it clear that you don’t have to be a Bush-supporter to be a good American (hell, with his approval numbers lately, I guess that’s obvious)…

I thought that the audience questions were fairly well balanced – but I would have enjoyed more “balance” within the show itself.

All in all, it was nice to see thinking people speak differently and hold different opinions within a civil setting. Civil discussion is a great thing…

I replied to your comment on my site, but I thought I’d visit your site as well. I thought the show was a great change of pace from the usual Oprah fare.

Richmond, I agree, more balance within the show, particularly the guests, would have been nice, but the show was still one of the better examples of civil discussion I’ve seen within the media in a long time.

    Hi Archana:

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’ve returned comment on my site but I’ll put it here. You obviously don’t like “right-wingers” much but that’s okay, I have my own biases against left:)

As I mentioned, I just about turned off the show when I saw who the guest was. It’s not that I’m closed minded, its that I hear the left on most of the media. (I just got Fox here in Canada so I am starting to relax on that a bit). Our government owned television/radio station CBC is extremely left wing. I also hear criticism of your government from most in entertainment, many of your media outlets, and everywhere in Canada so there is nothing new nor particularly “courageous” as Oprah stated about dissing your government. Heck, Hugo Chavez did it and he’s still sitting pretty. You don’t live in North Korea or Iraq for that matter. As an odd Canadian, I will take Bush any day over Saddam and over many of our previous governments.

It is obvious that we will have to agree to disagree on the Iraq war and on politics but I do agree that I was pleasantly surprised by the way Oprah handled it and the audience. The audience did not reflect an “uninformed” or “non-critical thinking” public.

From reading the bloggers commenting, I do agree that it would have been nice to have a guest with an alternative viewpoint but the audience, as a whole, was impressive. I’m glad I didn’t turn it off.

My wife too got on my case for walking off when Rich came on, so I went back and watched it. I agree that Oprah did not allow Rich to take her where she did not want to go, and this kind of discourse is worthwhile. Without a sycophant like Rich, I doubt the point could have been made so well. If I can get the segment off her TIVO, I’ll put it on my site – I’ll let you know if I do.

BTW, try commenting on KOS, or demoratsunderground, or any other leftist blog without being registered.
